The XK-9 is a British designed & manufactured explosive detector, offering the latest break through in the technology of wide area explosive detection. Primarily developed for an intelligence gathering role the XK-9 Explosive Detector is able to detect a wide bandwidth of explosive substances, including those most commonly used by terrorists and insurgent groups around the world.
The strength of the XK-9 is based on a simple design offering ease of operation and speed of detection, making the unit the ideal support tool for use by specialist search teams and EOD operators. This complementary technical support tool provides search teams with the ability to clear large target areas rapidly whilst providing positive indication of potential areas of danger from the presence of ammunition or explosive substances. This rapid detection process enables the EOD teams to make an informed decision based on the indicated threat and act in a timely fashion.
The XK-9 offers a detection capability that is able to penetrate through a variety of mediums including solid wall construction, underground storage and suspension in water. Other major features of the unit are:
The XK-9 Explosive Detector consists of a tough proprietary NON-Metallic handle that is hard wearing and highly durable. The unit is powered by a single AA battery, and provides LED indication when the unit is active. The intelligence of the system is contained within three selectable detection cartridges that are slotted in to the sample chambers on the front of the handle. Each cartridge is colour coded, and designed to detect specific explosive groups. The unit is fitted with a detection antenna that is designed to pivot through 90 degrees to indicate the direction where the explosive may be situated. The pivot of the antennae is manufactured from a low friction material that enhances the response of the antenna to any
explosives the XK-9 may detect.
The unit's detection cartridges are inserted in to the detection chambers of the handle of the XK-9 detector. These cartridges are then energised via the five electromagnetic induction coils that are located within the body of the handle. The purpose of the coils is to increase the effectiveness of the unit's detection process. The coils are powered by a single AA battery, and have an LED indication to show that the coils are activated.
The cartridges intelligence is made up from samples of less than 1 Molecule of material in each, during manufacture these are bombarded with safe forms of radio waves via a highly advanced technological atomic processing method, after which the molecular samples are then imprinted in to the centre of the metal body of the cartridge. The scientific technology of the design of the detection cartridges is highly complex and intricate in make-up.
Protective CasingThe XK-9 Explosive Detector comes fully packaged in a hard protective case. The detector and its components fit with in a foam cushion. A black belt pouch is provided for easy and convenient portability, so that it is available to use at any moment by the operator.
The pouch is made from cordura, and is foam padded with a nylon lining. The pouch is Velcro and press stud fastened, and has a wide belt loop at the rear.

The XK-9 is suited for deployment to a variety of operational roles which include the following:
Vehicle Check points
The XK-9 is ideal for vehicle check points. The unit can quickly screen all vehicles approaching the check point, and successfully determine if any of the vehicles have explosives on board. Once positive detection has been determined, a closer search of the specific vehicle can take place. This process would achieve a thorough and efficient screening of all vehicles entering a fixed point.
Ports Control
The new ISPS code has stipulated new procedures for screening containers at ports. The sheer number of containers entering a port makes other methods of detection for explosives inefficient. The XK-9 however, can quickly and categorically identify any containers that may have explosives present. Port security staff can then carry out further specific X-Ray and manual searches.
Open Large Area
The XK-9 is the perfect system for large area searches in refineries, military bases, open country and mountainous terrain. Planted, hidden or buried arms caches can be detected from distances of up to 500m.
Building Search
The XK-9 can determine if there are explosives present in a building without the need to enter it, operating from a distance if necessary. The XK-9 is ideal for covert search operations providing concise Intelligence for future development. Any thickness of wall can be penetrated including concrete, metal, brick or lead.
Naval operations
The XK-9 is ideal for the use of naval and coast guard operations. The unit can screen marine craft from a distance and determine if there are explosives on board, or even it they are being towed or attached to the hull under the water.
Coastline Search
The XK-9 is perfect for searching coastlines for buried explosives and weapons shipments either on land or hidden out at sea.
